Introducing Mend Coffee and Goods: A Beacon of Hope and Inclusion in Buckhead

Nestled in the Tuxedo Festival Shopping Center, the newly opened Mend Coffee and Goods is already making waves with its delightful offerings and inspiring story. I recently had the pleasure of visiting with my sister, and our experience was nothing short of fantastic. From lattes to quiche and avocado toast, the food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the ambiance simply beautiful. However, what truly sets Mend apart is the incredible story behind its creation—a story of hope and encouragement.

For years, I've followed Katherine Wolf's remarkable journey. Surviving a life-altering brainstem stroke in 2008, Katherine embraced her new reality, navigating life with a disability with unwavering determination. Her journey has been a source of inspiration for countless individuals, including myself and my sister, whose own near-fatal accident in December 2023 nearly resulted in paralysis. Thanks to skilled medical intervention and divine grace, she survived, emerging with a profound gratitude for the fragility of life.

During my sister's rehabilitation at Shepherd Spinal Center, I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those with disabilities. Many people are unaware of the daily obstacles and societal biases that individuals with disabilities encounter. This lack of awareness underscores the importance of spaces like Mend, which not only accommodate individuals with disabilities but also provide employment opportunities and a welcoming atmosphere for patrons of all abilities.

Since 2013, Katherine and her husband Jay have dedicated themselves to creating inclusive spaces where individuals with disabilities can find solace and build meaningful connections through inter-ability friendships. Their efforts have culminated in a variety of sanctuaries, including online communities, summer camps, and respite gatherings. The opening of Mend Coffee and Goods represents a new chapter in their journey, offering a space that embraces all, regardless of ability.
